Eucalyptus alatissima – I use to know this as Kingsmilli but now it is now subspecies alatissima. Where it was thought there were 50 species of Eucalypt there are now over a thousand and counting.

Silky Oak, Grevillea robusta
The Silky Oak tree is the largest Grevillea and grows from 8-20m high. In summer and spring it is covered in these yellow blooms. This tree is on a railway siding near home. Railway sidings are usually planted with natives and having surprising variety and colour.

Noble Caper and Caper Butterfly
This tree is also call the Queensland Pomegranite. The Caper butterfly feeds on on the caper blooms and had to seek this one out in the Royal Melbourne Botanic Gardens. I was lucky to be looking at this wonderful pompom bloom when the little beastie landed.

White Waratah
The white Waratah was discovered in the 1960's and it's coveted location was kept a secret until it had been shared and established. It is now a great favourite of gardeners and florists. The red Waratah can be spotted a long way off in the bush. Today I was at the market and saw a pink variety as well. The Waratah is the NSW state emblem.

Eucalyptus tetragona
It is the wonderful colour of the Tegragona that draws you in. People just love this one. Florists use it a great deal because of the unusual white stalks and gumnuts. It still has the pink tips and edges which softens the whole effect even more and is so indicative of gum leaves. It reminds me of an eau de nil dress I wore as a child and loved the colour ever since.
