I am fascinated by the graceful complexity of the grevillea. A symphony of treble clefs. The painting was made first with complimentary colours - green bloom and red leaves. Then the true colour - pink over green and visa versa, was fun and hard to do but give more depth and contrast. A burst of joyful colour.

Unable to resist these Waratah at the Adelaide Famers Market I then picked this Lemon-Flowered Gum (E. woodwardii) from a street tree to compliment them. The two looked great together and I just had to paint them.

Eucalyptus gillii
Silver grey leaved mallee trees make beautiful ornamentals. The lemon yellow gum blossoms are prolific and draw a mass of busy bees. You can see this in bloom in Summer in the mallee display garden at the Goodman Gate of the Adelaide Botanic Garden.

This stunning plants common name is Firewood Banksia. Firewood! Really, such a beautiful plant who could see it as no more than firewood. Tells us a bit about the focus of the colonisers.

These beautiful serrated leaves make a nest around the bloom. Many small wrens and other small birds hide in the dense spiky foliage for safety.

Walking along the Yarra later than usual I was struck by the sun gleaming in through the shadow of the trees. I painted this with a red background first to add to the depth and light in the painting.

I have documented my walks along the Yarra in the morning through this series of paintings. I started with a red canvas and paint the complimentary opposites before the true colour to give depth and interest to the work. It is a beautiful place to walk.

Around Yarra Bend the Yarra river turns and snakes around the foot of the steep cliff rise of Kew. River Red Gums lean over the river adding to this idyllic bush setting so close to the city. A hidden gem.

It is a crazy looking kooki plant in bloom. Found on the southern tip of Eyre Peninsula. I found this one in the car park of the SA State Flora nursery in Belair National Park.

This Grevillea lavandulacea is found naturally from South Australia, through Western Victoria to Melbourne. I love the way this explosion of colour dangles from the small spiky leaves. In this case the flower rests on the wire used to protect the plantings and reminds us of how hard it can be for our native wildflowers to coexist with development. Although is has no extinction rating and is not likely to be extinct anytime soon, it is slowly disappearing from areas it was once common. Low pollination and disturbance to fire regimes probably have something to do with it, add in over grazing and this plant is likely to be threatened in the near future.

Bugs love the blooms of this silver grey bush. When I asked the scientists what this little insect might be they didn’t know but were thrilled I had captured it as the bush attracted so many little vistors.This tells us just how important it is to local ecology.

This is the endangered species Olearia pannosa is endemic to south east Australia. It is a lovely big daisy with silver green soft foliage. By being more curious about our endangered species, planting them, learning more about them we can work together to protect them. In the video you see I went step further and made it into a pattern.

This stunning Western Australian mallee is known as the Pear Fruited Mallee or Dowerin Rose. I can’t get enough of these big gum nut flowers. This particular tree is located at Royal Park in the Australian Native Garden.
